Which Gas Does My Car Need?
For most vehicles manufactured before 2017. This is the traditional refrigerant used in the majority of cars currently on UK roads.
If your car was registered before 2017 it almost certainly uses R134a gas.
For most vehicles manufactured from 2017 onwards. This newer gas has a lower environmental impact and is now the industry standard.
If your car was registered from 2017 it likely uses R1234yf gas.
Not sure which gas your car needs? Don't worry — just bring it in and we'll check for you. 🚗
What Is a Nitrogen Leak Test?
If your air conditioning keeps losing its charge shortly after a regas, there may be a leak in the system. Rather than repeatedly paying for a regas, a nitrogen pressure test pinpoints exactly where the leak is — saving you money in the long run.
We pump nitrogen into the system at pressure and monitor for any drop — locating the leak precisely so it can be properly repaired before recharging.
Frequently Asked Questions — Air Con Regas Southend-on-Sea
How often does air con need regassing?
Most manufacturers recommend a regas every 2 years. Air conditioning systems naturally lose refrigerant over time — even if there's no fault or leak. Regular regassing keeps the system working at full efficiency.
How do I know if my air con needs regassing?
Common signs include: air not as cold as it used to be, the system taking longer to cool the cabin, unusual smells when the air con is running, or no cold air at all. If any of these apply, a regas is likely needed.
Do I need to book an appointment?
Walk-in customers are always welcome — however booking an appointment guarantees your slot and avoids any waiting. Call us on 01702 612000 to check availability and book.
How long does a regas take?
Most regas jobs take between 45 and 60 minutes from start to finish. We have a comfortable waiting area on site so you're welcome to wait while we complete the work.
Which gas does my car need — R134a or R1234yf?
Most vehicles registered before 2017 use R134a gas. Most vehicles registered from 2017 onwards use R1234yf gas. If you're unsure, just bring your car in and we'll check for you — the gas type is also listed in your vehicle handbook or on a sticker near the air con compressor under the bonnet.
What if my air con has a leak?
If we detect a potential leak during the vacuum test we'll advise you before proceeding with the regas. A nitrogen pressure test can identify exactly where the leak is so it can be repaired properly — saving you from repeatedly paying for a regas that won't last.
Do you service all makes and models?
Yes — we carry both R134a and R1234yf refrigerant so we can service virtually any vehicle regardless of age, make or model. If you have an unusual or older vehicle just give us a call beforehand to confirm.
