How Long Does It Take to Scrap a Car? | Amber Autos Southend

One of the most common questions we hear from customers is: "How long will the whole process take?" The honest answer is that scrapping a car can be completed in as little as a few hours from your first enquiry to having cash in hand — or it can take a few days if there are complications. Here's a realistic breakdown of each stage.

Stage 1 — Getting a Quote (Minutes)

Getting a quote is the fastest part of the process. Use our online quote form — enter your registration number, postcode and contact details, and we'll come back to you quickly with a price based on your vehicle's details.

In many cases we can provide a quote within minutes during business hours. The quote is based on:

  • Your vehicle's kerb weight — the biggest factor
  • Make, model and year — affects parts value
  • Fuel type — diesel vehicles often attract a higher offer
  • Current scrap metal market prices

Time: 5–30 minutes depending on when you submit.

Stage 2 — Agreeing and Booking Collection (Minutes to Hours)

Once you're happy with the quote, we agree a collection time. This is where flexibility comes in — we aim to accommodate you as quickly as possible:

  • Same day collection — available for morning enquiries across our primary Southend-on-Sea service area
  • Next day collection — available for most enquiries across our full coverage area
  • Scheduled collection — if you prefer a specific date and time, we'll work around you

Time: Same day to 48 hours depending on your preference and location.

Stage 3 — The Collection Itself (20–30 Minutes)

When our driver arrives, the actual collection process is quick. Here's what happens:

  1. ID and paperwork check — we verify your identity and check the V5C (if available)
  2. V5C transfer — we complete Section 4 or Section 9 of the logbook (depending on the version) to transfer the vehicle
  3. Payment — we pay you by bank transfer or cash on the spot
  4. Vehicle loaded — we load the vehicle and it's gone

The whole collection typically takes 20–30 minutes from our driver arriving to leaving. For non-running vehicles we bring appropriate equipment — this can add a little time but there's no extra charge.

Time: 20–30 minutes on the day

Stage 4 — DVLA Notification (24–72 Hours)

After collection, we notify the DVLA that the vehicle has been scrapped. This removes you as the registered keeper from DVLA records. The DVLA typically processes this within 24–72 hours, after which you'll receive a confirmation letter.

If you were paying road tax on the vehicle, the DVLA will automatically issue a refund for any full months remaining — this usually arrives within 4–6 weeks.

Time: 24–72 hours for DVLA to process

Stage 5 — Certificate of Destruction (Days to Weeks)

The Certificate of Destruction (CoD) is issued once the vehicle has been fully processed at our licensed facility. This is your legal proof that the vehicle has been responsibly scrapped.

Under UK regulations, the CoD must be issued within 7 days of the vehicle being processed. In practice, most customers receive theirs within a few days of collection.

Keep your CoD safe — it protects you from any future liability related to the vehicle, including parking fines, road tax penalties or insurance claims.

Time: Within 7 days of processing

Complete Timeline Summary

  • Get a quote — 5–30 minutes
  • Book collection — same day to 48 hours
  • Collection on the day — 20–30 minutes
  • DVLA notified — within 24–72 hours
  • Certificate of Destruction issued — within 7 days
  • Road tax refund (if applicable) — 4–6 weeks

From start to finish, the whole process can be completed in as little as one day — and the most time-consuming part (getting your CoD and tax refund) happens in the background without you needing to do anything.

What Can Slow the Process Down?

In most cases the process is smooth and quick. Occasionally things take a little longer — here's what causes delays and how to avoid them:

  • Missing V5C — we can still collect without it, but we'll need extra documentation. Let us know in advance and we'll tell you exactly what to prepare
  • Outstanding finance — if the vehicle has outstanding HP or PCP finance, it must be settled before we can legally collect. This can take a few days to arrange with the finance company
  • Location outside our primary area — we cover a wide area but collection slots in more distant locations may need to be scheduled a day or two in advance
  • Incorrectly described condition — if the vehicle's condition is significantly different from what was described at quote stage, we'll need to reassess before proceeding

What Happens to the Car After Collection? 🌿

While you're waiting for your CoD, your vehicle is being processed at our licensed facility. We depollute it first — safely removing all hazardous fluids — then carefully assess every component for reuse.

Usable parts are removed, cleaned, tested and listed on our eBay parts store — giving them a second life and helping other drivers find quality components at fair prices. The remaining shell is crushed and recycled, achieving a 95%+ recycling rate.
