How We Dismantle a Scrap Car — Inside Our Southend-on-Sea ATF

Most people hand over their keys, sign the paperwork and never see their car again. But what actually happens to it? At Amber Autos LTD we process scrap and end-of-life vehicles every week at our licensed facility on Stock Road, Southend-on-Sea. Here's exactly what happens — using a real 2017 Nissan Qashqai we collected recently as our example.

The Vehicle Arrives

Every vehicle that comes through our gates starts its journey the same way. We collect it from the customer's home or agreed location — free of charge — and bring it back to our facility at Unit 5 & 6, Stock Road, Southend-on-Sea SS2 5QF.

Before we touch a single bolt, we complete the DVLA paperwork. Section 9 of the V5C is filled in and sent to the DVLA, transferring the vehicle out of the customer's name. From this point the customer has zero liability — they're fully protected.

Step 1 — Depollution

The first and most important step for any licensed Authorised Treatment Facility is depollution — the safe removal of all hazardous fluids and materials from the vehicle before anything is stripped or crushed.

On the Qashqai we drained and safely disposed of:

  • Engine oil — collected and sent for recycling
  • Coolant / antifreeze — drained and segregated
  • Brake fluid
  • Power steering fluid
  • Windscreen washer fluid
  • Fuel — remaining diesel extracted from the tank
  • Air conditioning refrigerant — requires specialist equipment to reclaim safely
  • Battery acid / 12V battery — removed and sent to a battery recycler
  • Airbag canisters — safely deactivated
  • Catalytic converter — removed (contains precious metals for recycling)

This is the step that separates a licensed ATF from an unregistered backstreet operation. Unlicensed scrap dealers don't depollute properly — fluids end up in the ground, contaminating soil and water. As a licensed facility holding Environment Agency Permit JP3029SM, we're legally required to depollute every vehicle fully before processing it.

Step 2 — Stripping Usable Parts

Once the vehicle is safe to work on, we identify and remove any parts that still have value and can be given a second life. On the Qashqai — a popular and well-selling model — there was a good amount worth saving.

Parts we typically remove and list for resale include:

  • Alloy wheels — if undamaged and in good condition
  • Body panels — doors, bonnet, boot lid, bumpers and wings where undamaged
  • Lights — headlights, tail lights, fog lights
  • Interior components — seats, dashboard, door cards, steering wheel
  • Engine and gearbox — if still serviceable
  • Suspension and steering parts
  • Electrical components — ECU, alternator, starter motor, sensors
  • Glass — windscreen and windows if uncracked

All salvaged parts are cleaned, tested where possible and listed on our eBay parts store. This means a driver in Manchester can buy a genuine used Qashqai headlight for a fraction of the new price — and that part doesn't end up in landfill.

Step 3 — What's Left (The Shell)

Once depollution is complete and all usable parts have been removed, what remains is the bare shell — the body and chassis stripped down to the structural metal.

The shell is then loaded onto a recovery truck and taken to a metal recycling facility where it is crushed, shredded and separated into ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The steel goes back into the supply chain — it can end up in anything from new cars to washing machines to construction steel.

We achieve a recycling rate of over 95% on every vehicle we process. End-of-life vehicles are one of the most recycled products in the UK — scrapping your car is genuinely one of the most environmentally responsible things you can do with it.

The Certificate of Destruction

Once the vehicle has been fully processed, we issue a Certificate of Destruction (CoD) within 7 days. This is the legal document that proves your vehicle has been scrapped at a licensed ATF and that you are no longer responsible for it.

Only licensed ATFs can legally issue a Certificate of Destruction. If you scrap your car with an unlicensed dealer you will not receive a CoD — and you remain legally responsible for the vehicle. Always check your scrap dealer is a registered ATF before handing over any vehicle.

From One Car — How Much Is Recycled?

To put it in perspective, from the 2017 Nissan Qashqai:

  • Multiple usable parts listed on eBay and available to buyers across the UK
  • All fluids safely recovered and sent for specialist disposal or recycling
  • Catalytic converter precious metals recovered — platinum, palladium and rhodium
  • Battery sent for specialist battery recycling
  • Over 1,000kg of steel recovered for recycling
  • Zero vehicles sent to landfill
