How to Notify the DVLA When You Scrap Your Car | Amber Autos

When you scrap a car, notifying the DVLA correctly is not optional — it's a legal requirement. Get it wrong and you could face unexpected fines, penalty charges or even liability for offences committed by the vehicle after you've handed it over. The good news is that when you scrap with a licensed ATF like Amber Autos LTD, we handle the DVLA notification on your behalf — but it's still worth understanding exactly what happens and why.

Why You Must Notify the DVLA

Until the DVLA is formally notified that a vehicle has been scrapped, you remain the registered keeper. This means:

  • Any parking fines or road traffic offences will be sent to you
  • You remain liable for road tax if the vehicle is used on a public road
  • You could be held responsible if the vehicle is involved in an incident
  • Your road tax refund won't be triggered automatically

None of these risks exist if you scrap correctly through a licensed ATF — because we notify the DVLA as part of the process. But if you use an unlicensed operator, you may find none of this happens, leaving you exposed.

How DVLA Notification Works When Scrapping

The process differs slightly depending on whether you have your V5C logbook or not.

If You Have Your V5C Logbook

When our driver collects your vehicle, we'll ask you to complete Section 9 of your V5C logbook (or Section 4 on older-style logbooks). This is the section headed "Selling or transferring your vehicle to the motor trade, a vehicle dismantler or scrap yard."

You keep the yellow slip (Section 9 or the top part of older logbooks) as your temporary proof of transfer. We take the rest of the logbook and send it to the DVLA, notifying them that the vehicle has been transferred to an ATF for scrapping.

You can also notify the DVLA yourself online at gov.uk/scrap-your-vehicle before or after collection — but when you use a licensed ATF, this is handled for you.

If You Don't Have Your V5C

We can still collect without the V5C — it just requires a little extra paperwork. We'll ask for valid photo ID and a signed declaration of ownership. We then notify the DVLA using the vehicle's registration number and our ATF licence details. You should also notify the DVLA yourself at gov.uk/scrap-your-vehicle to ensure the transfer is recorded from both sides.

What Is a Certificate of Destruction?

Once your vehicle has been processed at our licensed facility, we issue a Certificate of Destruction (CoD). This is a legal document confirming that your vehicle has been permanently and responsibly destroyed.

The CoD is sent electronically to the DVLA, updating their records to show the vehicle is permanently off the road. You'll receive a copy for your own records — keep it safe.

Important: only a licensed ATF can issue a Certificate of Destruction. If you use an unlicensed operator, you will never receive a CoD — leaving you permanently on the hook as the registered keeper.

What Happens to Your Road Tax?

Once the DVLA processes the vehicle transfer, any remaining full months of road tax are automatically refunded to you. The refund is sent to the address held on DVLA records — typically by cheque, though some refunds are processed back to the original payment method.

The refund is for full calendar months remaining — not days. So if you scrap your car on the 2nd of a month, you don't get a refund for that month — only the complete months remaining after it.

Road tax refunds typically arrive within 4-6 weeks of the DVLA processing the notification. You don't need to do anything to trigger it — it happens automatically once the vehicle transfer is recorded.

What About Continuous Insurance Obligation?

Once your vehicle has been scrapped and the DVLA notified, the Continuous Insurance Obligation (CIO) no longer applies — you don't need to maintain insurance on a vehicle that has been issued a Certificate of Destruction.

However, you must maintain insurance until the point of collection. If your vehicle is on a public road without insurance before collection, that's a separate offence entirely.
