What Documents Do I Need to Scrap a Car in the UK? | Amber Autos

One of the most common questions we get asked before a collection is: "What do I actually need to bring?" The good news is that scrapping a car in the UK doesn't require a mountain of paperwork — but getting the right documents together beforehand makes the whole process quicker, smoother, and can even improve your payout.

Here at Amber Autos LTD, we're a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) based in Southend-on-Sea, and we handle all the DVLA paperwork on your behalf. This guide covers everything you need to know.

The Main Document — Your V5C Logbook

The V5C (Vehicle Registration Certificate) — commonly known as the logbook — is the most important document when scrapping a car. It proves you are the registered keeper of the vehicle and allows us to legally transfer it and notify the DVLA.

When you scrap your car with a licensed ATF like Amber Autos LTD, here's what happens with the V5C:

  • You complete Section 9 of the V5C (the yellow slip at the back) on older versions, or Section 4 on newer versions — this is the "Selling or transferring to a motor trader" section
  • We retain the yellow slip and send it to the DVLA on your behalf
  • You keep the main green V5C document for your records
  • The DVLA is then notified that the vehicle has been scrapped and you are no longer the registered keeper

This protects you from any future liability — including parking fines, road tax or insurance claims — that could otherwise come back to you if the vehicle was not properly deregistered.

What If I Don't Have the V5C Logbook?

Don't panic — we can still collect your vehicle without the V5C. This is more common than you might think. In fact, just this week we collected several vehicles without logbooks — it's something we handle regularly and are very experienced with.

Without the V5C, you'll need to provide:

  • Photo ID — a valid driving licence or passport
  • Proof of ownership — such as a purchase receipt, insurance document in your name, or MOT certificate
  • A completed statement of ownership form — we'll provide this and guide you through it on collection day

We'll then notify the DVLA using our own ATF documentation. It's slightly more paperwork but entirely manageable — just let us know when you book so we can prepare everything in advance.

If you want to apply for a replacement V5C before scrapping, you can do so via the DVLA for a small fee — but it's not necessary if you're scrapping soon.

Your Photo ID

Regardless of whether you have the V5C or not, we require proof of identity from the registered keeper. This is a legal requirement for all licensed ATFs under UK vehicle recycling regulations.

Accepted forms of ID:

  • UK driving licence (full or provisional)
  • Passport
  • National identity card

The Certificate of Destruction — What You'll Receive

Once your vehicle has been processed at our facility, we issue a Certificate of Destruction (CoD). This is one of the most important documents in the whole process and something only a licensed ATF can provide.

The CoD confirms that:

  • Your vehicle has been legally scrapped
  • It has been processed at a licensed facility in accordance with UK environmental regulations
  • The DVLA has been notified
  • You are no longer the registered keeper and bear no further liability

Keep your CoD safe. It's your proof that the car was legally disposed of. If you ever receive a letter from the DVLA or a fine related to that vehicle after scrapping, the CoD is your evidence.

Why You Must Use a Licensed ATF

This is really important — only a licensed Authorised Treatment Facility can legally issue a Certificate of Destruction. If you sell your car to an unlicensed scrapper, fly-by-night dealer or someone on Facebook Marketplace claiming to scrap it for free, you may never receive a CoD.

Without a CoD, you remain the registered keeper in the DVLA's records. This means:

  • You could receive penalty charge notices for the vehicle
  • You could be liable for any incidents involving the vehicle
  • You may have difficulty proving the car was scrapped

Amber Autos LTD holds Environment Agency ATF Permit JP3029SM and is fully licensed to process end-of-life vehicles. Every collection comes with full DVLA notification and a Certificate of Destruction.

Quick Checklist — Documents for Scrapping Your Car

  • ✅ V5C logbook (Section 9 yellow slip completed) — preferred but not essential
  • ✅ Photo ID (driving licence or passport) — required
  • ✅ Proof of ownership if no V5C — required without logbook
  • ✅ Payment details for your payout — bank transfer or cash agreed at booking

That's genuinely all you need. We handle everything else — DVLA notification, depollution, dismantling and the Certificate of Destruction.

Parts From Your Scrapped Vehicle
